Shaler Street Bridge Wins NASTO Award for Technology and Innovation
Lochner is pleased to announce the Shaler Street Bridge Replacement project was selected as the 2020 Best Use of Technology and Innovation Award winner in the Small Project category by the Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials (NASTO). Lochner provided design and construction consultation services for this Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project.
The replacement of the Shaler Street Bridge—located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—was part of the PennDOT project to reconstruct SR 19, which crosses underneath the bridge. As SR 19 is a high-volume, north-south expressway that bisects southern Pittsburgh, a primary goal for the project was to replace the Shaler Street Bridge while maintaining traffic on this critical connector. Lochner designed the two-span bridge to be constructed off-site and moved to its final location using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). The project marked the first time this innovative accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology had been used on a PennDOT project and reduced SR 19 construction closures to a total of four days, significantly minimizing impacts to motorists along this busy corridor.
NASTO recognized the project for its innovative use and successful implementation of technology to benefit corridor users, the local community, and the region.
