Matthew Cochran Presents at the APC Virtual Fall Seminar

Matthew Cochran, PE, structural engineer from Lochner’s Pittsburgh office, will be presenting at the 2020 Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC) Virtual Fall Seminar. On Tuesday, November 16, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Matt will present on Shaler Street Bridge, the first Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) project to use self-propelled modular transporters (SMPTs).

Shaler Street Bridge was a three-span, 180-foot-long steel I-beam bridge with significant deterioration and crossed over SR 19, a high-volume, north-south expressway that carries an average of more than 22,000 vehicles a day. As part of the SR 19 Reconstruction and Bridge Replacement Project, the project team used accelerated bridge construction techniques to replace the Shaler Street Bridge without causing major impacts to SR 19’s traffic. The new two-span superstructure was constructed off-site in a bridge farm adjacent to the project and moved into place using SPMTs. The innovative use of SPMTs limited the closure of SR 19 to just two separate weekends. This presentation will discuss the project from conceptual design to construction.
