Kauffman Loop Elevated Storage Tank
Location Leander, Texas
Owner City of Leander
As the rapidly growing City of Leander expands further north and east, a new 1200 pressure plane was required to serve the area, resulting in the need for additional elevated storage. Based on updates to the City’s water model and growth projections, a new 1.25 MG elevated storage tank (EST) was selected to meet this need. The project included a site development design with paving, grading, fencing, and drainage improvements.
Our team was retained by the City of Leander to plan, design, and provide construction administration for the EST design. Our team updated the City’s systemwide water models in WaterCAD to determine the required size and elevation for the proposed EST. After reviewing the project parameters, a composite EST (concrete pedestal with steel tank) was recommended as the best application for the project. Surveying, geotechnical investigations, environmental, and archaeological investigations were completed.
Because the selected site was located in the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, our team prepared a Water Pollution Abatement Plan as required per the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Our team designed drainage improvements to direct and detain stormwater and water from the EST overflow. Additionally, the soils underlaying the site were found to contain voids, requiring the EST foundation design to include drilled shaft piers.
Our team prepared the final design and construction documents for the EST, including offsite piping modifications, site grading, pavement design, and drainage improvements. After discussing with the City, the use of a 100% solids elastomeric coating on the interior of the tank was selected for its longer life and ease of maintenance. The project was permitted with both the City and the TCEQ. Our team assisted the City with bidding, construction administration, and onsite inspection services.
